What a fantastic selection. I like them all, had not heard of all, but the beach drawing by Helen Craig is particularly crazy and good! I also remember my dad getting the Giles cartoon book every Christmas, and all of us ploughing through it. I haven’t had a chance to pick anything but did remember this from a wonderful book which I recommend to anyone interested in the English countryside, old ways, and saving the planet!
That's a superb book Tessa one I have read a few times . Two artist from me today .  John Jenson 1930 - 2018  Ronald Green 1896-1972
Roland Green, not Ronald.  He illustrated a couple of Ladybird books, if not more.
Thanks Robert I do have trouble with the so called spell check it often changes words to what it seems to think I mean.
Stewart Lees . I can't show any of the work from his website as he has download restrictions on his work, but this is the cover of a book I've held onto for years simply because of the exquisite illustrations . Check him out if you can: Home (stewartlees.com)

A contemporary artist I admire is Chris Riddell.  He's the political cartoonist for the Observer.  He writes and illustrates his own books, and has illustrated many books by other authors. From Gulliver's Travels... Some of his own books... He's illustrated several of Neil Gaiman's fantasy/sci-fi books... As an aside, here's one of his political cartoons from a while back... He also produced a book of drawings for books that haven't been written yet...a popular theme with many illustrators... Like most artists he's an avid sketchbook user, often producing many detailed sketches.  His ambition is to fill at least a 1000 sketchbooks before he dies...
This is the delightfully quirky Illustration by William Heath Robinson which was used as the cover illustration for the Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators that Paul has referred to.

The fifth one down ( lady with the parasol and flowered hat) looks to be a preparatory sketch for the painting used on the album cover of ‘Selling England by the Pound’ by Genesis, which is one of my favourite album covers of all time. I will include the full colour version when we do album covers later this year.   Of the ones posted I really like the chap hooked round the tree, fabulous character in the face and hands.
Late posting today it’s been a very busy morning, todays choice is George Mackley 1900-1983.
