Welcome to this weekends bonus artist thread my choice of artist this weekend is : Augustus Edwin John OM RA 1878 - 1961 was a welsh painter, draughtsman and etcher for a time he was considered to be the most important artist working in Britain. Augustus was the younger brother of Gwen John a fellow art , both inherited their love of drawing from their mother who sadly died when Augustus was six years old. At the age of seven he attended Tenby School of Art briefly before leaving wales to live in London he studied at the Slade School of Art, University College London. He became the star pupil of Henry Tonks and even before his graduation was considered the most talented draughtsman of his generation. His sister was at his side and became an important artist in her own right.  Thetis a detailed bio on Wikipedia.  I hope you enjoy my selection of his work.

I didn’t realise that he had an interest in the New Forest gypsies of that era and that influenced his work. Hence your gypsy caravan and horse sketches Dixie.

I will be featuring Gwen John at a later date  Hilary would you like to do a introduction, I still have you down to do Singer Sargent as well. 
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

His drawings were fabulous - most of his paintings leave me somewhat shaken but not stirred (thinking of the weekend's pre-prandials).  He was far from being the only British painter to have a fascination with gypsies - Dame Laura Knight was another, and from an earlier generation, David Cox - someone (don't volunteer!  Never volunteer!) should do an intro on David Cox .... I think we've had Laura Knight, haven't we?  (In a nice way I mean.....  sorry about that, I've been watching a video featuring Groucho Marx..)

Your at it again Mr Robert Jones causing confusion, do you mean Cox the elder or the younger as both were artist as you know . I have a feeling that we might have discussed both but then I research so many that I often think we have featured someone to find out I’m wrong or the other way around say we haven’t featured them . I will check back on the long list and look , if not I will add one or tother to feature at some  point. I have enough names at the moment to last until August or September but would welcome more there must be hundred we haven’t yet heard of still.

Paul - Yes, I'm happy to do an intro for Gwen John at some point, and yes will definitely introduce Singer Sargent.
