Happy New Year to you all and welcome to Inspiration from Artists. I will present two extra bonus artists this week and then we will get back on the track next week . The artists for next week are Anne Toms and Graham Sutherland I will start this new thread on Sunday evening. This weeks artists are Mary Cassatt 1844 - 1926 and Gerard George Lants 1927-1958. Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American artist and printmaker who was born in Pennsylvanian but spent most of her life in France .
Thought I would show some more of her work.
I have always found Mary Cassatt a bit of a puzzle.  Some of her 'impressionist' paintings show strong lines and a classic training (the mother bathing the child, above), and others show a more experimental side (like her take on Monet's sunrise, above).  And now Dixie has thrown in the the farm worker walking through the long grass, which looks distinctly American to me, perhaps how Hopper might have painted a Wyeth.  Nothing quite hits the mark for me, though I tend to prefer her more classic leanings.  No doubt if I took the trouble to arrange some in chronological order, her journey would make more sense - something one should enjoy for the journey itself and not the destination.
I have a little book of her paintings which I find quite appealing but perhaps not exciting. She lived, studied and worked in Paris and Italy, and was influenced by the impressionists, in particular Degas, Courbet and Manet. I didn’t realise before that she was also attracted to traditional Japanese art and produced a series of prints of which these are some. Cassatt never married or had children, and it seems that her studies in Italy brought her to the much repeated Madonna and child theme.  Most of her paintings are clearly signed. Dixie, I wonder if your choice of the lady with steps in woodland above, is actually hers? There look to be initials bottom left but not her normal signature?
Tessa, looks like the painting you mention was by another American artist - below.  Will have a look at more of Mary Cassatt’s work later, especially the Japanese inspired prints.  (Have annoyingly had very intermittent internet access over the past week or so.)

Thanks Jenny!
The Brewster painting and the question of signatures jogged something in my memory.  Cassatt's painting of a "Girl Arranging her Hair'  was  the first Cassatt painting that caught my attention, and who wouldn't like the sweeping figure of 8 made by the arms and hair.  Apparently it was mistaken for a Degas, by the executors of his estate. Read the story at https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/entertainment/mary-cassatt-girl-arranging-her-hair/ but it begs the question that maybe she didn't sign all her works, at least not on the frontside.
Just back home having spent five hours waiting to see a doctor, who within thirty seconds said you have a chest infection, well,I told them that in the early morning. Thanks for sorting the mix up out Jenny , I did double check on google before posting  it , on both occasions it gave it as her painting. Mistake or not it’s generated some discussion which the thread is all about , I will look at the link Tony it sound quite a interesting story. The painting you put up is excellent, when I get my head working properly I will look at her Japanese style works Tessa from the few you have posted they look really good.
Found a few more of her Japanese inspired drypoint and aquatint prints.

Sorry you’re not well Dixie. Seems to be everyone is suffering at the moment. Hope you’ll be feeling better soon. Sitting around waiting for five hours can’t help!
Thanks Tessa I’m doing what thousands of others are and getting on with thinks . It was the frustration of sitting there and that two of the people were there because of severe hangovers, dehydrated , etc.  You have found some excellent paintings Jenny I think I prefer her Japanese artwork to the other paintings I’ve seen. I think all artists have some work that is worth viewing if you look hard  enough.
I also prefer her prints to her paintings, Paul.  Hope you’ll be on the mend soon.  (We’ve only just started to recover from a nasty virus picked up the week before Christmas.)
