Welcome to the first of the Christmas week bonus artist , Anna Mary Robertson Moses1863 -1961 . Known as Grandma Moses  was an American folk artist who began her painting career in earnest at the age of 78 and is a prominent example of a successful art career at an advanced age . More information available on Wikipedia.
I had heard of Grandma Moses but not actually ever seen any of her work... what a delight .
Her work brings a strong flavour of American history - it is, of course, primitive in execution and conception; she was never trained, and if you want a REALLY self-taught artist, that was Grandma Moses.  She's important because she brings back a largely lost world.  Not only that, though - Sylvia's right: she was also a delight of an artist, her paintings conveying so much happiness, some subtle touches of social comment, and liveliness.   A good, long life - and I'd be prepared to bet that her painting helped her to achieve it.
Her paints are as you both say bright and cheerful I think the style lend itself to been cheerful. A few of her landscapes they have a certain charm to them , the lost peaceful rural scene.
Some of her paintings have a certain charm.  I like the last few posted above, especially the last one, the snow scene with the flying Father Christmas and his reindeer - such a lot of detail to keep you looking.
