There was much in this thread to inspire suffering.
If one reacts emotionally to somebody's intellectual views, it only proves that one's achilles heel has been pinpointed. It means that there is an overwhelming resistance and denial of one's conscious standpoint residing in the unconscious, which consciousness attempts to defend against. Emotional rage is always a sign that an unconscious complex has been activated. /Mats
Our judgment of "artfulness" implies a projection of value. Nobody, including you, would pay the same amount of money for a child's scribble as for a painting by Picasso. Arguably, there is no other field of human culture where the discrepancy is so big, between what we think is proper art and what is mere clutter. So the notion that "everything is art" doesn't hold water. In that case we should be able to pick up a cow pat and sell for good money at an art gallery. Mats
Yes, A chimpanzee. I think it is the promoters that need congratulating and the people who parted with their money need therapy.
There are some avenues which, on the whole, are better left unexplored. I was about to have breakfast .....
People who make art their business are mostly imposters (quoting Pablo Picasso) <div style="position: absolute; left: -99999px;"><div style="position: absolute; left: -99999px;">The people who make art their business are mostly imposters.Pablo Picasso Read more at: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/p/pablo_picasso.html</div>The people who make art their business are mostly imposters.Pablo Picasso Read more at: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/p/pablo_picasso.html</div>

I am a great believer in paying attention to the words of painters that I like and admire, I believe that if you can't learn from them, you can't learn from anyone. At the moment I'm putting another book together on Composition and I hope to include much of what I consider to be excellent advice collected over time from a number of artists both living and dead. As Forum members will have gathered by now I am a great fan of the work and approach of Frank Webb. I have attached a list of his Convictions as a PDF. If you have the time perhaps I could have your opinions on them. John
I too believe in paying attention to the words of painters, I think it is so important to learn from those you admire. I am not such a fan of Frank Webb to be honest, but do you know this quote from John Singer Sargent? "Cultivate an ever continuous power of observation. Wherever you are, be always ready to make slight notes of postures, groups and incidents. Store up in the mind... a continuous stream of observations from which to make selections later. Above all things get abroad, see the sunlight and everything that is to be seen." I find it so true, I am always reminding myself to observe the world around me and take inspiration from what I see. I write poetry too and find this advice can equally be applied to writing poems. I particulary identify with what he says about travelling. I see travelling as a part of my artistic process, and try to visit a new place as much as possible. With each country I visit I gain a new perspective. Even if I just travel to another part of the UK, I gain a whole new wave of inspiration. Last summer I travelled to Cornwall and rented a carvan, but I didn't like the rental company so this summer I am going to Wales and will rent from this company . I plan to travel around the coast and paint lanscapes. Has anyone done anything like this before? Or has anyone used that company before - would be great to get some tips on good painting and camping spots! I think that camping and painting go beautifully together, it is wonderful to be able to wake up every day and capture the different shades of the morning, right in the heart of nature. I may also try one of the courses and holidays that are advertised on this website, can anyone recommend one?
Good one Sylvia, he is demonstrating a sea scene in oils to our club on Saturday. Love his work - that's why I booked him.
