Hi all, I'm an intermediate artist, mostly working in oil. A few years ago I did a course in oil portraiture with Marion Dutton, and did really well, I was very proud of my portraits and even did a few of my own out of the learning from the course. Then in 2022, I went into a coma for about a month and since then, I seem to have lost my portraiture skills somewhat as well as my confidence with it. I'm hoping to get it back, but so far I'm really struggling. I haven't started another portraiture yet. I've done only one successful portraiture since the coma.  Anyone else in a similar position, in terms if finding it hard to get started again? At the moment I'm doing a lot of miniature oil paintings so I am still painting. I'd love to hear from anyone in the community and make some friends here and help motivate one another.
Hi Angela, this is quite understandable considering what you’ve been through. Saying that, it’s a common problem, lack of inspiration is something most artists suffer from periodically, myself included.  Just try and get back into your portraits slowly, and my advice is not to treat every piece of work as though it’s going to hang in the National Portrait Gallery! In other words, chill out and just enjoy painting, perhaps work up a few small oil sketches to loosen up and help you get back into the routine, widen your repertoire and perhaps set up a still life composition. You won’t have lost your skills, this is a temporary blip in your artistic journey… Of course it’s easier said than done, but you can do it… I’m confident of that!

Hi Angela Hello and welcome to the forum. That must have a been a very traumatic period. You've made a good choice popping in here, there's always someone to help with your art work, if needed. Look forward to seeing your paintings.
Welcome Angela. Alan’s advice is very good and it would be lovely to see some of your miniatures in the Gallery here.  We do all have barren gaps for any number of reasons. I haven’t painted much during the heatwave but have started an oil this week thankfully. I am part of an art group which has a too long gap during the summer which doesn’t help. You will certainly find help if needed and interesting discussions here so please dip your toe in the water and join in!
I can't find this member. Have they left.
I noticed that they had left no information when they originally posted not sure why .
If you have nothing in your Gallery, so far as I know the system will not identify you as a member: I could well be wrong about that, but it's only been a day ago after all.
At the time of writing, she hadn’t put anything on the gallery! I can’t see the problem, it’s a potential new member so welcome her - I’m sure she’ll reply when the times right!
Thanks Robert , I was unsure as to why there was no information. Didn’t think it was anything untoward.
If you click on the name of the person posting it should bring up the basics and I’m sure it did initially but now doesn’t. The site can be a bit confusing for new people so maybe , hopefully Angela will return. Possibly deleted by mistake. Time will tell.
Angela hope you drop back into the forum as it sounds as if you could benefit  with some encouragement , advice and support which you would certainly here. It’s a great community to be part of. I have Parkinson’s which affects my concentraron and also can  tremors can hamper fine brush work. I am currently in painting block mode but I  do take part in Challenges and I would suggest you join in some of them
Yes I hope we will see some of her work and offer encouragement. I was a little confused when I clicked on the name and it said not found.
