Hi all, I’ve had an email from an art supplier warning about potential future shortages of cobalt pigment.  I don’t know how valid this is - and presumably different manufacturers will have different levels of stock - but thought I should share the information in case you want to top up before the price rises (or maybe experiment with alternatives).

Yes there are potential issues with the supply of cobalt.  There are huge demands on the supply for batteries etc which has led to massive increase in price and less available for the production of pigment.

A problem that is also likely to affect Cerulean Blue, which is derived from the same source.  Both of which are already among the most expensive pigments, with Cobalt Green and Cobalt Violet.   Time for another Monsieur Guimet, to synthesize Cobalt as he synthesized Lapis Lazuli/Ultramarine.

Thanks, will use ultramarine for practise pictures in the short term. Co-incidentally I was reading about Klein Blue today.  Apparently, you can get a can of household style paint of IKB for 100 USD.
