Thanks for all your comments; my landlord, whose dog she was, seemed OK - sad but OK - until night fell; then he had a drink: and so did he: we shall draw a veil over the embarrassing details - Charlie had been his mother's dog, then his late partner's; so there was a lot of emotion tied up with that old dog.  She'd have been very impressed by the reactions to her passing!  As in, "if you cared so much, why didn't you feed me chicken every day rather than this 'healthy' stuff?".   Life, eh?  Gor lumme..... You'd think the older you get the more you'd be inured to loss: instead of which it gets worse.
Oh so sorry Robert. Our 17 year old German Pointer died in 2016 and I’m still really missing him. Each of my dogs has broken my heart when they’ve gone and it doesn’t get any easier. How wonderful that you have a painting though.
Robert - I send you my heart-felt condolence. I think my dog's (& cats) have saved my sanity many times. I lost Sam last month, and have really had a time adjusting. I keep looking around for her, or popping up, thinking I need to feed or walk her. "Loss" is the thing we all have in common. The hardest lesson , for me, is to accept it.
The depth of grief associated with losing an animal companion can be profound as all of those who have commented know from experience. So we understand your tears Robert and it's a lovely painting of Charlie.
