Perspective

SUNDAY DRAWING CLASS -22 Anything that is further away from us is as small and looks vague through naked eye. At the time of drawing or painting we need to illustrate this matter correctly. The name of this subject is perspective. Like many other things, it may seem difficult to understand this issue for the first time. Although it is not so tough at all. If you try to understand the matter with a calm mind then it will not be a problem. And this knowledge will help you to use the 'space' correctly during drawing or painting. In one of my previous class, I mentioned that most of us want to finish a painting with one single attempt. And that leaves the painting with lot of mistakes. So before finally painting, we need to do some homework as well. Aerial or Atmospheric Perspective This perspective refers to the way the atmosphere combined with distance influences and affects what you see. . Four things are directly affected due to distance- textures, colors, tones and size . Details and textures become less evident with more distance. Close up texture and detail are often large and in sharp focus, while texture and detail that is further away is vague and less clearly defined. For the use of color : foreground and near distance appear bright and vibrant , so use warm colours for them. Coloures in the far distance appear much less bright. Cool colours should be used for them. Tonal contrast is dramatically reduced with distance, and some times it disappears completely. A grass near on foreground needs to be painted with good and different tones but distant hill might appear as one pale mass. The most effect or impact we observe for a perspective matter is on the changing of object Size. If you look at the lengthy stretches of a long road, surrounding trees, buildings or light posts you will get a good idea about this. But in this case, a special thing to remember is that all of us do not have the same standard or ability of observing. All are not able to see these four things in a same way. For that reason, you can find out difference of two skilled artists' painting which are created from the same view. So, you need to improve your own viewing ability without focusing on how good are others on this subject. Only then you will see the noticeable change in your work. One more thing is that in the context of the weather, we can see a thing in good or vague condition. There is a difference between seeing things in urban areas and seeing things far away in the rural areas. Again, there is a difference between seeing things far away in the cloudy day and seeing things far away in sunlight. These matters should be on your thought process. Those simple points are create the character of a painting. Next week, we will discuss about linear perspective.
