I'm off to my oil painting class today where we will attempt a still life having spent the first 3 lessons practicing brush work by copying parts of pictures of oil paintings. I seem to be OK doing this but for the life of me I can't seem to do anything original. For some reason I can't get out of the habit of selecting topics that would do well in water colour. Indeed, I still seem to sketch in too much detail and then paint by numbers despite my old water colour teacher's instructions and exhortations. Maybe painters in oils see things differently to water colour artists. Most of the people I have spoken to about this seem to settle on one or the other medium and say that they are more comfortable this way. I'm wondering if there is a forum topic here - or have I missed the point?
