cast shadows

Hello again folks. The subject of my personal blog - www.jackiesimmondsartyfacts.blogspot.com, is CAST SHADOWS, and how they can affect what you draw. The post contains some images which explain the subject far better than any words can do, so do please have a look at it. Cast shadows can totally destroy the "form" - the 3 dimensional illusions we try so hard to create on paper, so it is quite a useful subject to study. Draw, say, a pepper, with a nice highlight along the top, and it is clear to understand. Put that same pepper alongside an onion, so that the light causes the onion to throw a shadow over the pepper, hiding the highlight, and suddenly, that part of the pepper looks all wrong. If you were to draw a small rubber ball, you would be able to give the illusion of the roundness of the ball by careful drawing of the tones - light on one side, shading gently ROUND the ball to its darkest side. But if that ball was sitting beside, say, a cereal box, which was casting a shadow across the ball so that there was no obvious changes of tone on its surface, that circle you draw could end up looking flat, like a coaster. A face, lit from above or from the side, will have a shadow under the nose - a cast shadow which, if drawn exactly as seen, could end up looking like a moustache! If you would like to know more, do head over to my blog, hopefully the link above will take you there. You will find pictures and photos to underline the teaching. Jackie
