Artistic background

Now retired but spent working life as a commercial artist. Began at 17 as a junior artist in a top London studio which served top advertising agencies-became a lettering and layout artist and moved on to two more studios then joined Newnes & Pearson as layout and lettering artist. Joined Fleetway Publications as layout lettering artist serving numerous national magazines then became art editor of various publications. Then left and formed own studio producing national publications from Fleet St offices after 12 years sold the company and took a sabbatical for six months! Boredom took over so applied and was successful in taking position of art editor of Titbits-unfortunately after a year an industrial dispute at IPC Magazines saw the end of the magazine and I found myself as a floater working for numerous titles. Meanwhile I had been working on various national newspapers including the Daily Mail/Daily and Sunday Mirror/The Sun etc and then was asked to join the Daily Mirror and eventually became Art Editor of the sports section-a happy twelve years saw out my retirement! Playing golf had been a pastime for about 40 odd years and oil painting for the past 5 years -my grandfather and uncle were both artists and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy etc so art has always been part of the family background. I now sell a fair amount of my work to fellow golfers and my stuff hangs in various golf clubs plus oils that are displayed and sell in local framers. Have exhibited at the Chelsea Art Society Annual Exhibition for the past 4 years and I have been approached by a gallery interested in holding a one-man exhibition so am looking into that quite keenly!

Thank you Adele-what a lovely thing to say! If you are an example of Paintersonline then I am in good company!

Bernard, I envy you. You have had a very varied and interesting career. I don't think many of us can claim that. You sound like you're enjoying your retirement, something that a lot of us on this site have in common. Hope you are able to put on your one-man exhibition. Paintersonline is a wonderful art family to belong to, where lots of us give encouragement to each other and advice should it be needed. Enjoy your retirement.
