I am a journalist turned semi professional artist and have drawn and painted all my life, as work allowed. I find I work better if I am in a small group which has a regular tutor, as I can resolve problems when another, professional, eye takes a fresh look. Working alone often means repeating mistakes! Feedback is invaluable. My personal view is that drawing is the basis of all good art.
