A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England

yorkshire

No shortage of places beginning with Y but the only one I’ve sketched in is Yorkshire. I featured the Yorkshire village of Dent in an earlier blog, and.these ink sketches were made during a short walking break in Wharfedale and the Worth Valley. Looking at these sketches again brings back all the pleasures of country walking with a sketchbook. When you see a subject there’s always a grassy patch to sit (mind the sheep droppings!) or a dry stone wall to lean against for a quick pencil sketch. If the weather’s kind, the ink work can be done over the pencil on the spot. If it’s not (more than likely in Yorkshire) then the next village will have a welcoming tea shop or pub where the sketch can be finished, and a bit of local knowledge picked up. Linton is a small village across the River Wharfe from the larger village of Grassington. The river can be crossed by ancient stepping stones or the 14th century packhorse bridge to reach the 12th century Linton Church. The village is surrounded by hill farms. Ingrow, on the outskirts of Keighley, is another village surrounded by hill farms, but best known nowadays for its railway museum and station on the Keighley & Worth Valley steam railway. The railway and surrounding area have been seen by millions in the 1970 film “The Railway Children”, filmed entirely on location in the Worth Valley.

I walked up the Wharf to Buckden and the church where JBPriestleys ashes are. Wish I’d had a sketch book. Might take one to Southwold. But could I sketch like you? No.
