1st ever successful on the spot line and wash

About the first time I've managed to make a line and wash sketch on the spot, in true Urban Sketching fashion, which I think has been worth the effort.

If you've been following my recent blog posts you might know that I've been carrying out a project to produce 100 urban sketches of Port Talbot, the South Wales town in which I live. In the last week I've tried to make a couple of line and wash sketches. Using colour really isn't my forte, but just sketching with pen is very much my comfort zone, and I've wanted to try to take myself beyond this. As it happens I went back to my hometown - London - yesterday, to play in the semi final of a quite prestigious quiz competition. It took place in the Hilton Hotel just around the back of the Tate Britain Gallery, and since I arrived early I nipped around the front of the Tate, and made a quick line and wash sketch of the building. Urban sketching means always having your pen, pad, small paintbox and water bottle with you. The result - well, I don't say it's perfect - it clearly isn't. But it looks more like a line and wash urban sketch than anything else I've produced to date. This was made in the shelter of a bus stop literally across the road opposite the facade of the gallery.

Thanks Olga. Not first try, just first try where I think I'm getting somewhere! Yes, I've been meaning to give a waterbrush a try.

Always wanted to do more of these but I'm always on the run :) This is really nice for the first try. If you want to make it more comfortabe maybe try to get a waterbrush instead of water bottle, it's very convenient!
