David Dickinson

Biography

I'm a 39 year old disabled self taught artist. After working for many (frustrating) years in watercolour I switched to acrylics and boy did that change my artistic life. I loved it. I could finally achieve effects and details that I could only have dreamed of in watercolour. After several years developing my skills I eventually moved on to oils. Another huge revelation. I was hooked. The effects and the details were incredible. Unfortunately, being asthmatic the solvents (even the odorless ones) were too strong so faced with the heartbreaking realisation that I might have to give up my most loved medium I tried water mixable oils. What a fantastic medium! I have never looked back. My inspiration has always been nature and the countryside. However, as I am disabled I can't get outside and paint so I use photos as my reference material. I'm very much inspired by artists like Terry Harrison, Geoff Kersey, David Dipnall in addition to American artists like Mark Keathley, Abraham Hunter and Thomas Kinkade. I would describe my style as romantic impressionism. I like using vibrant but subtle colour to create a soft harmony and give a peaceful and relaxing sense of atmosphere. I want people to feel they could just step into my paintings and get lost in them for a while.
