Whatever you have done it has worked!! Wonderful and joyful paintings. You have really captured the gappy smile and the light in the eyes. I would have liked to have seen it in colour too as I think you were probably being too hard on yourself and it looks as if it is really good in that form as well.

Thank you for your kind words, Thea! Believe me when I say I got the colours all wrong - the poor child looked liked he was suffering from hypothermia but at least it was a start. Am doing watercolour classes (only started last week) so hopefully should start to improve in the coming weeks. Do you have some pictures in the gallery, I would love to see them as I have seen you comment somewhere else that, like me, you love portraiture. How can I see them?

Have a look on my gallery under my name 'Thea' and two portfolios should come up. One is headed Portraits and the other is Thea's Paintings. I did my first watercolour portrait (actually first portrait) just over a year ago. I only paint in watercolour having started about 4 years ago when I took my first watercolour course. I got totally hooked on the medium and although I have tried other mediums nothing does it for me like watercolour.

Thea I have just taken a look at your gallery and your watercolour portraits are fabulous! If I am half as good as this I will be happy. I love the fluidity of your paintings and your colours, you are very gifted without doubt. Any tips, guidance or secrets even would be an enormous help! You don't do yourself enough justice. All the other comments on your pictures are spot on, you are brilliant and don't ever stop painting! Like you, I too love watercolours but also love to do portraits so I figured it was time I tried to put the two together. This is the only one I have done so far and I got all my colours wrong, never mind. Practice, practice and practice some more!

Hi Kay...You may think you got your colours all wrong, but you have the tonal work spot on, as shown by your turning the work into black and white...That is the important bit, if you get that right, then translate the tonal strengths of your colours, you are on your way....Well done.

Must add....You have captured the essence of your son brilliantly in this portrayal! Full of life and verve and character.

Ruth thank you for your advice - tones are always a bugger to get right at the best of times aren't they. Oh, and my son is definately full of life and verve, you got that right!!! He's a little star x

My first attempt at watercolour in years and even though I have got the essence and likeness of my son the colours were all wrong so with the wonders of modern technology I have turned it black and white digitally and it actually looks better! So all is not lost.

About the Artist
Kay Ashton

Have always been able to draw but only started taking up painting about three years ago, when people wanted to buy my paintings and requested commissions. Watercolours came first followed by oil paintings, a medium I just loved, it was made for me, although I do enjoy other mediums at times such as…
