Having just completed my first ever painting in oils (I'm a watercolourist) I can appreciate the work that has gone into this. How you got that clarity of colour I will never know . A lovely crisp painting full of light.

Just looked through your whole gallery and they are all good, especially Glenfinnan viaduct but this really stands out; you are getting better and better.

Thanks Diana - I love the effects of light and feel that out of all my paintings so far this one really conveys this effectively. By the way I have visited your site - what a superb collection. I have a long way to go!!

The light in this is just wonderful...a super painting!

Do you use layers or glazes and let them dry inbetween? I just can't get the hang of oils at all.

I paint a first layer to set out the approximate tonal values over the whole canvas and then let it dry before adding more colour and detail and build up gradually.

10" x 12" Oil Painting. This is one of my favourite hidden spots in Paris - It is in fact the George Sands museum and there is a delightful tea room behind the trees. It was a really hot day and the shadows were very strong. There was a wonderful scent from the flowers but of course you can't paint the smell!
