Well, keep using your method, because it's successful - question your own methods too much and you can wander away from the obvious and lose the all-important likeness in tricky applications of paint.
That beret looks like you could touch it, and the portrait itself is excellent. Good thread so far :)

Is that a Royal Engineer (sapper?)? - I seem to remember the tie and the badge - my father was a sapper in the last world war ... and what a God-awful, soul-scarring war it was for many of them. Refers to your previous post, of course: even I wouldn't confuse the RAF and the RE.
