Get to it then my friend!
There is a difference between the eyes - but then I have an asymmetrical face, noticeable around the jaw line; you can't paint a recognizable portrait generally by replicating one side of the face to represent the other, not that I suppose anyone would try to. Eyes need to be more or less symmetrical, but there are variations; even between nostrils and ears. Well spotted by Syd, though - because if it had been a mistake, it would have begotten other mistakes, and the likeness would begin to slip away. One reason why I've done so few portraits - and if I do, I like to paint old Victorian types with multifarious whiskers - the women of course present greater problems, but a nice full moustache and beard is wonderful for a portrait painter.
I haven't done many portraits myself Robert - think this is my fifth. Definitely not my strongest point, but I think I'm improving! Got some more hair blocked in last night: Anth.
Ha, no she isn't Syd. She's a Russian venture capitalist believe it or not. She's a looker :)
Thanks for that! We can thank the photographer for the blurred background - I was offered a choice of reference material and this one grabbed me immediately :)
Jenny is looking wonderful, yes that background is really great.
I'm really impressed with your systematic method. Excellent result.
Thanks Splosh! It has been described as 'painting by numbers' by some but it works for me :)
She's looking great! The fabric and the folds in it are especially effective. I also love your technique of having the background in less sharp focus. I work in a sort of similar way in terms of area by area and straight on to a primed canvas - and it's also be called 'painting by numbers' by less generous folk (not on here i should add), but if it works for you, which it clearly does, then that's the main thing. Is the finished piece on the gallery? I had a little look just now but couldn't see it.
Hi Lucy, still working on it (as we speak actually) - hoping to at least get the dress finished this evening so I'll post progress when it's done ;)
Three cans of Monster and several strong coffees later: I've just had to go back and tweak the underarm/shoulder area as it was bugging the life out of me, but it's looking much better now (this was taken pre-tweak)
Are you leaving the background as is? It looks intriguing like that.
