Unlike acrylics or oils, watercolour brushes are generally easy to clean. But they can still leave residue, especially in the ferrule (the metal bit). If pigment builds up, your brush may lose its shape, softness, and spring.

1 Rinse immediately after use

Swirl your brush gently in clean, lukewarm water (never hot as it loosens the glue inside the handle). Wipe it on the side of your water pot to release leftover pigment.

2 Use gentle soap (if needed)

For stubborn staining pigments (like phthalo blue or alizarin crimson), lightly lather your brush with a gentle soap. This might be baby shampoo, brush soap, or even mild hand soap. Avoid anything harsh or scented.

3 Rinse thoroughly

Make sure there’s no soap or pigment left in the bristles. Squeeze gently with your fingers from base to tip under running water until it runs clear.

4 Reshape the tip

Gently reshape the bristles with your fingers to bring back that fine point or chisel edge.

5 Dry laying down or bristles down

Let your brushes air dry flat or with the bristles pointing downward. Never upright in a jar, as water can seep into the handle and damage it over time.

• Don’t scrub the bristles or use your palm to wash them as this breaks down the fibres.
• Don’t leave brushes sitting in water, it warps the shape and loosens the glue.
• Don’t use hot water or harsh household cleaners.
