Using pen, ink, watercolour and collage, follow Judit Matthews to create this beautiful, autumnal fox in mixed media.
1
Using a large piece of smooth watercolour paper, draw up your design of a fox with foliage around it with pencil.
Then draw over this with ink, using cross-hatching for the background and fluid line-work for the rest.
It is important not to put too much ink on the pen otherwise you may drop some on your artwork.
2
Once your ink-work is finished, leave it overnight just to be sure that everything has fully dried.
Before adding the collage make sure you rub out any pencil marks.
3
Using a pencil and the tracing paper draw around the shapes you want to cover with collage.
Then placing the tracing paper over your patterned papers, cut around the shapes with a sharp scalpel.
Gradually work through the areas you wish to cover with origami paper- sticking them down with pva glue.
It's best to do three or four pieces of collage at a time to avoid getting confused as to where each piece belongs.
4
The painting is completed in layers.
Layer one using a mix of the two yellows and the cadmium red.
Layer two using the colours above with a bit of added crimson.
The final finishing touches are the shadows which use the indigo and the violet mixed together.
Use a bit of stippling in certain areas and add some dribbled on paint for extra texture.
5
For the final stages, draw around the collaged on pieces of paper using fine liner pens to make the whole painting look more cohesive.
You may find that you need to deepen certain areas of the cross-hatched background too.
Don't try using the dip pen at this stage as some of the patterned papers can be rather absorbent and you will find that they suck up the liquid ink.
