When we think of producing atmospheric paintings, the crucial components are soft, lost-and-found edges, muted colour and shorter tonal ranges, where black to white is exchanged for a gradation of soft greys.  Effects of light and its direction also come into play.  Many years ago, a painting that had a big impact on me was Gerald Coulson’s Mill in the Mist. It appealed to me for the way it communicated mood and atmosphere using the silhouette of a windmill set beyond a very simple foreground.

Rising Mists on the Wreake

The river Wreake’s moods change through the seasons and I find it an endless resource for creating inspirational paintings. Rising Mists on the Wreake is a demonstration of mood and atmosphere.
