Poppy, coloured pencil on Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300 Series (20x16cm)
Bring your pet portraits to life as John Stansfield shows how to draw a portrait of Poppy the cat using a variety of coloured pencil techniques.
John's top tips for drawing with coloured pencils:
- Keep a piece of sandpaper to hand for making super sharp points.
- Clean your eraser on a piece of scrap paper before using it on your drawing to avoid unwanted marks.
- Take a step back to view your drawing from time to time. This helps you see that the drawing is going as it should.
- A sharpened electric eraser is great for taking out very small areas without removing the surrounding colours.
What coloured pencils will I need?
Coloured pencils used for this demonstration are all Faber-Castell Polychromos apart from the jade green and sky blue light which are Prismacolor, Caran d'Ache raw umber 10% and Pablo umber.
