The RottweilerPuppy, Faber-Castell pastel pencils on Clairefontaine light grey card, (21x30cm)

Follow Lucy Swinburne step-by-step and learn how to draw an adorable puppy using pastel pencils.

For this step-by-step demonstration I have chosen this adorable rottweiler puppy to focus on.

Rottweilers are known for their muscular body, thick hind-quarters and easy trot, and if you didn’t already know it, descended from the mastiffs of the Roman legions. Those of you who have owned or known a ‘rottie’, will appreciate how they can be gentle, loyal playmates and faithful companions, despite their reputation for being dangerous.

I deliberately chose a mainly black dog. They are the easiest to capture when learning to use pastels, but give the greatest satisfaction upon completion.

Before you begin, it's a good idea to use a piece of A4 paper to lean on to protect your drawing as you work.

Have a pot to tip your pencil shavings into to hand too.
