Keep your acrylic paints tidy and inspiring with clever storage ideas that are both practical and creative.
Acrylic paints are fun, versatile, and come in so many colours that it’s easy to collect more than you expected! But without a little organisation, tubes and bottles can quickly pile up, making it harder to find the shade you want.
Organising your acrylic paints not only saves time but also makes painting more enjoyable. With a little creativity, your art supplies can be as inspiring as the masterpieces you’ll create with them. Here are eight simple tips for keeping your paints tidy and ready to use.
Tip 1: Group by type and size
Acrylics come in tubes, jars, and bottles. Store similar containers together so you don’t waste time searching for the right one. For example, keep all small tubes in one box and larger bottles on a shelf.
Tip 2: Arrange by colour family

Arrange your paints in colour order, from warm reds and oranges to cool blues and greens. This not only makes your collection look gorgeous but also helps you quickly spot the shade you need.

Tip 3: Use clear storage solutions
Transparent bins, drawers, or jars let you see colours at a glance. Many artists like using plastic drawer units or divided craft boxes, affordable, easy to label and stackable.
Tip 4: Keep frequently used colours handy
Most painters reach for certain colours (like white, black, or primary colours) more often than others. Store these in a small caddy or desktop organiser so they’re always within reach.
Tip 5: Prevent drying out
Make sure caps are closed tightly after each use. Wipe threads clean before sealing to keep lids from sticking. If a tube or bottle is damaged, transfer the paint into a small airtight container to extend its life.
Tip 6: Label and date your paints
Acrylics can last for years if stored properly, but over time they may thicken or dry. Use masking tape or a marker to note the date of purchase, especially on larger bottles, so you know which paints to use first.

Tip 7: Store in a cool, dry place
Avoid leaving paints in direct sunlight or near heaters, as heat can cause them to dry out faster. A closet, cabinet, or drawer away from extreme temperatures is ideal.
Tip 8: Make it inspiring
Storage doesn’t have to be boring! Decorate your boxes, paint the handles of drawers, or use colourful containers. A tidy, cheerful setup makes it easier to dive into painting whenever creativity strikes.
