Canvas waiting to be stretched
Understanding the basics of framing can make a big difference in how your painting is perceived and preserved. Here’s a quick guide to help you get started.
Why frame your painting
Framing a painting protects your artwork and also makes it look better. Oil and acrylic paintings are durable, but framing gives protection against dust, moisture and physical damage. A good frame can also complement your art, drawing attention to the piece while harmonizing with its style and colour palette.
Know your surface
Oil and acrylic paintings are ususally created on two common surfaces. Stretched canvas: canvas stretched over wooden bars, already sturdy and doesn't always need glass. Canvas panel or paper: a thinner surface that would benefit from framing.
Beginner tip: If your painting is on stretched canvas, you may not need glass. For paper or panel works, glass or glazing is recommended.
Frame styles

Floating frame
Floating frame (tray frame): Gives a modern, gallery look where the canvas appears to 'float' inside the frame.
Traditional frame: Adds elegance with ornate details or a simple wooden border.
Minimalist frame: Sleek and simple for contemporary paintings.
Preparing your canvas
Before framing, ensure your painting is fully cured. Thin layers can be touch dry in 30 minutes or so, thicker layers a couple of hours. Thick layers (impasto) can take more than 24 hours.
Touch dry: The surface feels dry but the paint underneath might still be soft.
Fully cured: The paint has hardened all the way through which can take weeks depending on thickness.

Factors that affect drying
Humidity: High humidity slows drying time.
Temperature: Warm rooms speed it up, cold slows it down.
Airflow: Good ventilation helps acrylics dry faster.
Paint thickness and additives: Heavy body paint or gels extending drying, retarders slow it down intentionally.
