I've been thinking about doing something similar Willie, painting in oil from a pen & wash or watercolour that I've previously done. I'm finding that my style in oils is too tight and I can't seem to loosen up. Did you find it a help or hindrance to try this experiment? It looks loose yet you haven't missed out the important detail, some lovely textures in the foreground.

Thanks, Fiona, have a look at my pen & wash its in the gallery. You will see that its much looser and possibly the better for that (despite trying to keep the oil version loose as well). This one required a 'revisit'! I find that working from plein air sketches helps steer me away from the disciplined lines that my architectural background binds me to. Thanks for your comments always appreciated.

Thank you for your reply Willie. I've just looked at the pen & wash....blimey there's quite a difference even though this is loose. If you don't mind me saying a like the sketch, as you say it has that fresher, immediate feel to it. I must give it a go because I've stopped using oils as I don't like anything I produce with them at all. Thanks again.
