Not a Roman triumphal arch -quite the opposite. This is the last arch of 14 that supported the Rookhope smelter chimney as it junctioned with the hillside and made its way a mile to the top of the fell to discharge its lethal fumes. The fumes ensured that a smelter rarely lived beyond 40 years. In the picture I tried to capture the broken landscape as it wraps itself around this lonely monument to broken lives. (oil 14"x10" alla prima)
