Another great one. We called them "Leeries" in the NE Scotland (lamp lighters) I too can recall them.. but only just.!

Yes me too, I remember the fellow on a bike with a long pole reached to pull something to light the gas. No ladders for ours :)

Another from my childhood. The lamplighter doubled up as knocker up riding around on a bicycle and tapping on bedroom windows with a long pole to get folk up for work. Would need at least a van, two men and three weeks notice today, not one old guy carrying a rickety wooden ladder on his own in the dark. (-:
