The Pretoria Pit disaster was a mining accident on 21 December 1910, when an underground explosion occurred at the Hulton Colliery Bank Pit No. 3, known as the Pretoria Pit, in Over Hulton, Westhoughton, just a few miles from where I live. A total of 344 men and boys lost their lives in the worst pit disaster ever in England. A sketch In tribute to all the brave souls who kept the country in energy for so many years under the worst possible conditions risking their lives daily.
