Revisiting Childhood....

Yes, I remember this well, we had a book of the Brer Rabbit stories...I was too young to get the racist connection. The Disney film got a lot of stick over this.

I don’t remember Brer Rabbit or uncle Remus, not familiar with the stories or the political connections. But I do get the link to the innocence of childhood and wanting to be there again, away from the constraints of freedom of thought without meaning any harm or implication. Big sigh! Lol Great sketches by the way Jim.

Zipideedooda Zipideeday ph oh oh what a wonderful day. Fab books and if I remember correctly film. I don’t remember any of it as being politically intentionally incorrect co that’s not ever how it was. To me Uncle Remus was a lovely old man and his colour just never entered into my psyche. We truly didn’t think like that. Well I certainly didn’t. Political correctness is sometimes over the top and connotations can be misconstrued. So sad, it’s very understandable but I loved my Golliwog and certainly didn’t think any the worse of black people. Remember Robertson’s jam and collecting golliwogs. If things are intended to hurt people they will if things are not they won’t. Rant over.do like your pic Jim.

All happy memories

Lovely sketches Jim. I didn't have Uncle Remus - must look him up - but did enjoy the Brer Rabbit stories. Never knew they were racist.

Brer Rabbit at primary school - we were ignorant then, we didn't realise how some people would feel. But we were kids...we were lucky to have happy memories, even though we didn't have much. I remember loving to read stories set in boarding schools, as far as could be from my actual experience....I have changed my views a lot since then!

Thanks all for the comments. I too used to love tales of school,Marjorie, Billy Bunter of Greyfriers School, Tom Brown, Flashman, The Winslow Boy, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and the rest. Age of innocence stuff before life's reality sets in.. Why are kids in such a rage to grow up and leave it all behind and why do they never believe us when we say schooldays are the happiest days on our lives..(-: ps: "Song of the South" was the name of the Disney film of Brer Rabbit and co. Wonderful.

Some spur of the moment doodles from long ago...Line and wash sketches from Brer Rabbit and Uncle Remus (long before we knew, or cared, about racism and civil rights and all that stuff) We just had fun and were happy.(-:.
