I agree about the words, Jim. They're from a time when far off places seemed more exotic than they do now, these lines provoke mysterious fantasy. I'm glad you didn't give her 'one' eye, I tend to be too literal in interpreting subjects like this.

I always remember this poem from childhood, but can't remember whether it was from school or my grandad reciting it, beautiful words go with a good painting 😃

I remember this from childhood too and I don't know if it came from my dad or granddad. Funny the things we remember (and lots that we forget!).

I'm betting there are a couple/few folk remember the " Albert and the Lion" poem. Also called " The stick with the horse's head handle" that always seemed to be around in childhood"...? Anybody? (-:

Jim, i might be wrong but was it Sandy McPherson who used to say it, something like " and the lion eat little Albert" but that's the only bit I remember, I would be about 7 At the time ?

Linda, yes, and Stanley Holloway aslo did a monologue of "Albert and the Lion"and later, Roy Hudd. Can still be found on Youtube.

Some words never leave you. I've touched the subject before, but this poem I never/have will forget. My uncle who served in the army in Egypt used to recite it by request to wide-eyed kids with wild imaginations. This is just stanza one.Oh, how it still makes the nerve ends tingle..(-:
