candlelight still life

I keep returning to this Valerie but don't know how to comment. I'm doing a few still lifes myself at the moment and like you, it's never been my subject really. I do like how you have painted this, especially the subdued palette and the background....I always get stuck with backgrounds. It's a very appealing painting.

I appreciate your comments Fiona - I agree backgrounds are tricky - my only background on this one was my messy studio so it had to use my imagination and try to tie it in with the still life - which I hope has worked. I found that more interesting to master than the 'still life' itself. Normally I start my oil paintings with just colour as this is what love and I think maybe that helps.
