Living Dead

“ The Secret Life of Trees” by Peter Wohlleben, a fascinating read about how they protect each other in order to protect themselves. My husband was glued to this ( illustrated version) and shared many of the thoughts. The answer is probably in there. Interesting and excellent work Martin.

I agree with you and this is a very good depiction

Excellent subject and pen and wash Martin…..I find your paintings fascinating. Wonder if it’s the same kind of survival mechanism as some fruit trees employ, where if they feel a heavy crop of fruit would make them vulnerable, they shed their fruit as it is still forming to leave a crop that they feel they can cope with. If these trees are in Sandy soil, perhaps the tree cuts off the supply of nutrients to areas that it can survive without, to save the main trunk?

An interesting title for a very interesting painting. I love how you’ve painted it!

Excellent picture Martin 🙂

Beautiful work Martin. Perhaps the scant nutrients could only go so far so some survived because the others died . Its fascinating anyhow!

Fascinating Martin. You have portrayed these old gnarled trees really well.

Terrific.

Love the varied shapes of the trees and how the painting is so evocative Martin.

Thanks for your valued feedback everyone. It’s a fascinating subject. I’ve read about fungal threads linking trees of the same species beneath the surface in order to send messages for survival. The book you mention Marjorie sounds interesting. I suspect survival is behind it. I’m sitting looking at a slightly neglected houseplant that’s shed several leaves because it’s not been watered enough. It will survive. Plants have intelligence.

Pen and ink en plein air sketch completed with watercolour washes in studio. I loved the agonised twisting bleached dead trunks and branches on these living trees I found in a sandy gulley near Bawtry and pondered why some lived whilst others died. On Saunders Waterford hp 16x12”
