How beautiful this looks Thomas, I'm assuming it's watercolour by the lovely washes. It's nice to put the medium and the size of your paintings when you post them.

I'm a retired teacher and now I'm painting watercolours. I'm a self taught painter an prefer the negative watercolouring. That means: Often I paint the negative background around the object (without any masking) , so the object can stay brighter.
