What a great picture, didnt realise it was coloured pencil until reading the description. I think its amazing the detail you have here.

How kind of you to say so William, and Hazel, thank you for your generous comments. If you are interested to see the scope of what can be achieved with coloured pencils the UK Coloured Pencil Society is just about to start its annual exhibition in the Westminster Gallery, Methodists Central Hall, London (it will run from the 19th Septmber to 1st October).

This is a super painting Susan, the detail is fantastic! I've tried coloured pencils but I just don't know how to use them! You have certainly mastered their use. Can't wait to see more of your work.

Thank you Fiona and Larry for you enthusiastic comments. Regarding the use of coloured pencils, for my style (and there are many other approaches) I find that I need to allow a good deal of time, and patience, to work on a picture, coming back to it repeatedly rather than working on it for too prolonged a period. I gradually build up layers of colour and strength of tone until I have what I want. And an absolute must is to keep the pencils sharpened to as fine a point as possible, with a good sharpener, and sometimes fine sandpaper too. Without a near needle-sharp point the detail can't be achieved, I think, nor the strength of colour. I don't know whether that helps.

Thank you Susan for your advise but I don't tink they are for me, especially after reading two elements that you say are required......'time' & 'patience'!!!!! I'm afraid I haven't got much of either!!Lol

Fair enough. It's a good thing that there are many mediums and styles so we can each find one that suits our individual temperament! :-)

This drawing, made in coloured pencil (Derwent Artists), was completed recently using for reference a number of sketches I made, and photographs I took, of riders engaged in the 'Tent Pegging' activity at the Royal Windsor Horse Show earlier this year.
