Fox by Sue Smith

I've just tried to draw a fox - and found it very difficult, so I sympathize - their faces are much smaller, more compact, than one thinks at first: did you find that? I like this one's expression ; I think the front legs are a little too bushy and thick, ditto the chest fur, and that the body tends to broaden out towards the back, where it should become thinner. Most foxes are actually quite small animals - thin, honed, with quite close-cropped fur. Maybe try pastel pencils, or thinly shaved pastels, to refine those details.

I found this very hard. I used pastel paper for my first effort and was not impressed. Then someone lent me some velour paper which worked much better for getting the depth of fur. I could have done with putting a background in first I think. The fox was quite bushy in the pic I copied. I did use pastel pencils for this drawing but prefer the pastels.
