At first sight it looks as if huge amounts have been done at this stage. The fact is though I've simply washed 3 glazes of Crimson over the dress allowing each to dry thoroughly first. With a touch of white added to the crimson I've reinforced the highlights and lighter areas of the dress and with a mix of Crimson and raw umber I've darkened areas in shadow thus creating light, medium and dark areas. I've then painted the background using a mix of Ultramarine and raw umber which gives a lovely rich black colour (I rarely use tube black) and used the same mix as a wash for the belt.
