Gannet 2 by Angus Ballantine
Remember that I've never used inks before and am therefore finding my own way with them entirely not having seen how other artists work in this medium but I'm guessing I wont go far wrong using an acylic watercolour technique though I guess time will tell. Having completed the basic sketch I then wet the entire sky area. With ultramarine blue I started at the top laying in a fairly dark wash then just added more and more water (not white) to lighten it towards the horizon to give an impression of depth. At this point with the paper still damp I tried lifting colour out to produce clouds as I do with watercolour but found the inks stain heavily by comparison meaning a clean lift is next to impossible. However, this effort did result in quite a nice purply colour which I decided to use as the basis of my cloud shadow. I then highlighted the clouds with white ink whilst the paper was still damp which gave a sort of highlight but not as bright as I wanted. I therefore let the work dry for 24 hours before coming back and adding the areas of white you see in small circular motions which have given an effect I must admit I'm quite pleased with. The next stage is to paint the sea which will require some practice, trial and error on scrap before I'm happy to actually tackle the picture itself.
