Hi Stephen, I also used these water-soluble pastels (Stabilo Woody Pastels) and I found very fun to paint with it. I too encountered at first your own difficulties, but for the finest detail I used pich up the colour with the wet brush from the blunt end of the pastel. Anyway I like much your portrait, the result is very good.

So much conveyed with minimum marks, lovely work. Are they Neo pastels, Caran d'Arche?

Thanks so much for your comments and help regarding how to add detail - thanks Cesare. The pastels used are 'Mont Marte Watersoluble Oil Pastels Signature' - very cheap from TK Max! I really enjoyed using these and will later venture to other brands mentioned by Cesare and Thalia - thanks again for the suggestions.

I'm becoming a fan of this media although I'm having difficulty accurately geting a good likeness with the blunt end of these stubby pastels. I also discovered that I need to use paper more suited to water as the surface was begining to break up as I tried light washes. However I'm having fun with these
