I really wanted to paint the city of Shanghai, a city with a population of over 24 million and I thought I would be painting the frantic pace of a modern city until I discovered "The Bund", which is the colonial era part of the city landscape. There was a sense of peace and calm I wanted to capture from the many characters moving through this area and the majestic buildings.
