Charcoal was used by just about all the old masters in their preliminary sketches, and when you use it yourself, you understand why. I like to use carbon pencils, too - wonder if you've tried them? Something else the old chaps used was silverpoint - I think you might well like that, if you've not yet tried it. I had a figure like that once, you know. In my dreams.
