I think that your colour version, benefited from the preliminary tonal sketch. You have the variation of tonal values perfect in this one.

I thought I would try a quick watercolour from the tonal watercolour sketch I posted earlier. Someone gave a talk at the art group recently, where he set the challenge to do a tonal painting and then one in colour based on it. I missed the talk but thought I would give it a try anyway.
