Nice subject - which edition was the article in?

Many thanks Dennis and Michael, it was in the March Artist mag. I have read about doing tonal sketches for composition in books. I suppose they are probably based on notan. I know the Impressionists were heavily influenced by Japenese art and design.

I have no idea what notan is but it works beautifully Stephen! Sorry, I just reread your text and it's about connecting the darks together. You have done it and it really looks superb!

Another attempt at a notan sketch, one of the principles seems to be to connect the darks together.

Stephen Slater

I am a self taught amateur painter, I mostly paint landscapes in watercolour but I 'dabble' in other mediums from time to time. I really enjoy my art, especially painting outdoors when the weather allows.
