I really like the haziness of the painting with nothing over defined. I have never used the mediums this is done in so I don't know about the difficulties of achieving a look with them. However, I have done a few race horses in my time and know that conveying dynamic movement is the key to it. Possibly showing flying turf around the horses hooves in a more definite way (i.e. darker splashes) might help this dynamism. However, this is a very mid-tone painting and as such it has harmony, so maybe adding darker tones may jar. All these decisions are very tricky, aren't they! Overall, I think you have achieved a very good drawing (horses not easy) and a nice atmosphere, so I think job well done.

Thanks for your comments Thea and apologies for my typos. For info:- the painting is a bit darker than this in reality, but got lighter in the scanning process

So I went on a course "Animals in motion", using Artbars and Inktense pencils and this is the result (following instructions). I can't say I am pleased with my painting, but I thought you would like to see what these materials produce. We applied both material dry and applied water with a brush afterwards. The Artbars really picked up the texture of the paper. It would have taken much work with a synthetic brush to dissolve the these texture marks and we encouraged not to do so.. The Inktense pencils seemed to be much more controllable, but when try they are permanent and cannot be removed, while the art bars can be wetted and lifted off.
