St Andrew's Cathedral- Church Bells
St Andrew's Cathedral sits on a site in Singapore which was expressly reserved in 1823 for a church by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore. In 1834 the foundation stone of the first Anglican Church was laid on the site. Its construction was completed in 1837 but the building was struck twice by lightning and ultimately condemned as unsafe and closed in 1852. In 1856, the foundation stone of the present building was laid by Bishop Daniel Wilson of Calcutta. I'd been attending the Cathedral for years but did not know about the bells in the bell tower until I was tipped off by a priest who previously served at the Cathedral. He suggested that they would make an interesting subject for painting and he was right! 44 very steep steps up a very narrow antiquated spiral staircase later, I finally saw the bells and painted them.
