Brilliant work, almost like a black and white photograph only better.

Stunning!

Yes stunning. Very well done.

Excellent! Your old boy is lovely, and what a gorgeous arch to his neck. It is a brilliant painting...Get back in that paintbrush saddle and keep going, girl! Best of luck and give him a carrot from me....

Hmmm...He might prefer an apple?

Brilliant painting in all respects

Excellent horse portrait Ruth

Gosh, thank you all for your very kind and generous comments, if you are interested, the original photo reference can be seen at http://archerart.co.uk/pictures/displayimage.php?album=10&pid=65#top_display_media. You will see that I have altered the bridle, head angle and given her a listening ear. Her eye is also exaggerated, as I love her eyes. Ruth - carrots, apples, mints (all kinds), even the occasional ham sandwich (rather disturbing...) when she manages to escape and go on the lunchbox rob. She's quite a character! You've really spurred me on (I know, I know, enough already with the puns) to make the effort to paint more - thank you all.

This is wonderful Ruth, love the work on the bridle also.

Tonal painting in gouache of my very ancient old horse (25 and still going strong...). I 've had a bit of a break from painting, so felt that concentrating on tonal values would be a helpful way to get back in the saddle (pardon the pun) - need to try and loosen up a bit, mind!
