The Red Boat, Polperro, Cornwall
Every year my wife and I visit Cornwall. One of our favourite destinations is Polperro on the south coast. Polperro is a 13th century fishing village, with a reputation for smuggling and privateering. Boats were licenced by the Admiralty to attack and capture enemy ships, bringing great wealth to many Polperro families during the latter half of the 18th century. In later years, Polperro has become one of the most popular resorts in Britain for artists and visitors alike. This painting shows some of the boats in the harbour at low tide and captures the late afternoon light.
