I am just painting boats at the moment, and hope mine will be as good as yours. I do like the way you have used the ropes to lead the eye into the painting. A really nice picture.

Lovely light effects in this Richard, and I am in awe of the amount of detail you have included. This must have taken you ages.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Much appreciated. I really enjoyed painting this and was fortunate to have some good references, as the light was fantastic when we visited. To answer your question, Jane, this took 17 hours to paint (I keep a log, as everyone always ask this question).

This is beautiful Richard, 17 hours well spent.

Lovely painting which is full of light. Extremely well drawn boats as well.

Every year my wife and I visit Cornwall. One of our favourite destinations is Polperro on the south coast. Polperro is a 13th century fishing village, with a reputation for smuggling and privateering. Boats were licenced by the Admiralty to attack and capture enemy ships, bringing great wealth to many Polperro families during the latter half of the 18th century. The privateers often combined official business with smuggling, returning with cargoes of contraband to sell ashore. In later years, Polperro has become one of the most popular resorts in Britain for artists and visitors alike. This painting shows some of the boats in the harbour at low tide and captures the late afternoon light.
