It was formerly included in the "Old World warbler" assemblage. It is found in the Indian Subcontinent, primarily the Himalayas. Its range includes Bhutan, India, Nepal, Tibet and Pakistan. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and heavily degraded former forest. The common name commemorates the English ornithologist Hugh Whistler. This is one of six species that used to be considered one under the name of Golden-spectacled Warbler. After the split, the other five are Golden-spectacled Warbler, Grey-crowned Warbler, Plain-tailed Warbler, Martens's Warbler, and Bianchi's Warbler. Whistler's Warbler has two subspecies, the nominate and nemoralis.
